Australia is a story about the land down under when the world was at war and the Japanese were blindly attacking Pearl Harbor and Darwin, Australia.

Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman prominently play the movie leads. An aristocratic lady Sarah Ashley (Kidman) comes to Australia to catch her husband cheating but finds him dead and discovers a deep-rooted conspiracy to take over her land called the Faraway Downs. The villianous landowner neighbor wants to maintain a cattle supply monopoly to the army with her land and cattle.

A woman that comes to sell her property and take her husband back to England decides to stay and fight the corruption with the help of Drover (Jackman), a cowboy of sorts, who though initially relectant, later agrees to fight by her side!

Thenceforth starts a love story that goes through ups and downs and tests their bond in failure and success!

My take on this movie: Worth a watch on DVD. Nicole Kidman is a sight to behold for the guys and I guess the women would want to see Hugh Jackman, the People magazine’s 2008 sexiest man alive! But, the movie is slow and tedious in many parts and lacks the “epic” feel.

My rating:
Rating: ★★★☆☆
(Rated: PG-13 Running time: 2 hours, 45 mins)

Genre: Historical, Romance

The gigles, screams and adoration in the theatre from all the teens present were what made me write a better review for this movie. If I had seen it alone, I’d probably called it an average movie…but obviously a section of our society (teens) feel it’s worth watching and for once I need to look at it from their point of view too.

Vampires have varied in structure and form since centuries of depictions and though the basic things remain the same, the peripheral qualities change. Our hero has eyes that turn colors (and at one point they are golden!!) He has cold hands, pale skin, runs fast, climbs trees even faster and has superhuman strength. Innocent, rebellious Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) falls in love with a vampire, Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson), who studies with her in school in Forks, Washington, where she has been sent by her mom to live with her dad.

A slow and tedious love story follows. I think it was pretty slow in a lot of places. Many a times I kept hoping they would kiss or make love…but nothing happens (sorry to disappoint you people.) Of course, no story can be complete without some villains and here they’re a set of three “bad” vampires that threaten to disrupt their love and make a meal out of Bella. I would’ve expected to see some scary, frightening scenes to follow but it was pretty lackluster. Happy ending. Everyone goes home!!

I guess most teenage girls went to see Robert Pattinson. I can’t see any “handsome-ness” in that man but the teen girls all do…so I guess he is. The teens boys probably just went along…I doubt Kristen Stewart was really that much of a motivation!!

Our rating:
Rating: ★★★☆☆
(1 of those stars is for teen appeal) PG-13…..Running time: 2 hours

Genre: Romance, Teen

Great Movie! 22nd in the series. Go see it!!

Since Daniel Craig took over as James Bond the series has taken on a new and exciting turn for the better. After multitudes of similar Bond movies, we are finally watching a new revolution. And, it’s important to see this one because I think this begins Bond’s new nemesis, Quantum.

James Bond heads out to find the people that blackmailed Vesper Lynd (Bond’s lady love who went to her watery grave in Casino Royale) and makes the battle very personal. In doing so, he discovers a larger-than-life evil organization hidden from the top intelligence agencies in the world and one particular member of this organization, Dominic Greene (Mathieu Amalric) who is plotting to control an essential ingredient of every day life in South America.

The difference with Daniel Craig is that he has gone back to the old glorious days of Sean Connery and the “rough and tough” James Bond that is not dependent on gadgets but gets down and dirty and I personally LOVE IT. This is the quintessential James Bond the way I grew up reading Ian Fleming’s books.

Adding to the list of 83 official Bond girls are Olga Kurylenko (on screen as Camille Montes) and Gemma Arterton (on screen as Strawberry Fields)…both possessing the requisite to be a Bond girl…being HOT or HOTTER!!

There you have it…So go out there and ENJOY the movie! Have fun!

Our rating:
Rating: ★★★★☆
   (Rated PG-13……running time: 1 hour 46 minutes)

Genre: Action

Now, this is an unexpectedly funny movie….not in a LMAO kinda way but pretty funny. Bertram Pincus (Ricky Gervais) is a dentist whose inter-personal skills are much less than desired as is his habit of not being a very friendly person. In fact, he goes out of the way to avoid helping people to the extent that everyone around him knows him as an annoying and nasty little man. Then one day he dies for seven minutes and starts seeing ghosts. All these ghosts want him to help them and as they all gang up on him, Frank Herlihy (Greg Kinnear) steps in and makes a deal with him to help him get rid of the man in his wife’s life in return for making all the ghosts disappear. What follows is hilarious as well as manages to strum your heart strings ending in a tranformation that even Bertram is suprised by. Ricky has a funny sense of humor and a way about him that you will find funny. Greg Kinnear is fairly decent as he has always been….average. And, then there’s Te’a Leoni, beautiful as ever, playing the role of Frank’s wife. She does a pretty good job acting.

Directed by David Koepp, who has the unique experience of being a screenwriter and director for blockbuster hits like Jurrasic Park, Panic Room, Stir of Echoes, Mission: Impossible, Spiderman etc.

Our rating:
Rating: ★★★☆☆

Maybe some of you might label this as a “chick-flick” but it’s a movie that moves your heart, in fact it twists it and turns it around and by the time you are over and done, it’ll make you feel emotionally drained and exhausted. Who in this world doesn’t want a second chance at life? Maybe you’re young now and have the best life but believe me, when you grow older there will be regrets and things done wrong and a terrible need to redo some things in your life. Some of us do get that second chance, like Adrienne Willis (Diane Lane), a mother-of-two in her mid-life who finds her husband cheating on her and separates from him only to find him asking her to take him back after 7 months. Confused and disoriented with her senses, she decides to take a break and lands into the arms of a handsome doctor, Dr. Paul Flanner (Richard Gere) with his own set of problems arising from a crisis of conscience. They bond over a weekend in Rodanthe (pronounced Roe-Dan-Thee) on the North Carolina coast in an inn for four days with the backdrop of the hurricane winds, flooding and mental chaos. But do second chances take you on a different life path or do they just provide a respite from the existing one? Watch the movie to see the life-altering romance and the aftermath of it all.

A beautiful movie to watch. An utter delight to see established actors like Richard Gere and Diane Lane take on these challenging roles and tranform them into a true masterpiece of art. Directed by George C. Wolfe and based on a novel by Nicholas Sparks of the same name. Our rating:
Rating: ★★★½☆
.

Signing off……until next time…….Sonny Banks!!
